What On Earth Is Ringette?
In January 2002 I received an e-mail from Cindy Melnyk that said I should have ringette images on my site. I had never heard of ringette, so I did an internet search. Boy was I surprised! There are over 50,000 pages on the internet containing the word "ringette" and over 100,000 skaters worldwide participate in the sport. After hours of visiting dozens of ringette sites, I got hooked and decided to put this page together.
As it turns out, ringette is a Canadian game that was first introduced in 1963 in North Bay, Ontario. Originally developed for girls, ringette is a fast-paced team sport on ice in which players use a straight stick to pass, carry and shoot a rubber ring to score goals. Ringette is usually played by teams of 10 to 18 players with 6 players allowed on the ice at one time. Ringette looks a lot like hockey, but cross checking is not allowed. The game has borrowed many elements and rules from games like soccer and basketball. Over 50,000 players participate in ringette in Canada and thousands of players play the game in Finland. The first World Ringette Championships were held in 1990 and have been held every two years since then. Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States have participated in the World Championships since 1992. France and Russia also have active ringette programs and the game has been introduced into many other countries around the world. So far, Canada and Finland are the only countries that have won the World Championships.
