While searching for speed skating sites I ran across a link to a skate sailing site. Skate sailing is fascinating. There are over 1000 ice sailors in the world and over half of them live in Sweden, where they have been skate sailing for hundreds of years. Sweden has had national championships in skate sailing since 1909. The first modern ice sails were invented in the 1880's. They looked like trapezoids and could only go 30 mph. Around 1900 a five sided ice sail was invented that could go up to 45 mph. In the 1980's new sails that surrounded the skater on all sides were invented that can go up to 75 mph. Tour Skating Images Tour skating is a cross between speed skating and cross country hiking that is very popular in Scandinavia. They have dozens of Långfärdsskridsko clubs and thousands of members. The skates are actually strapped onto hiking boots or ski boots. The skaters can easily remove their skates and hike from one lake to the next. 50 to 100 mile skating tours are very common. Most of the tour skating sites are in Swedish, but the Swedish Tour Skating Clubs site has an introduction in English.

Many of the images on this page came from Stockholms Skridskoseglarklubb, the Stockholm Ice Sailing Club site. Their pages are in Swedish, but they are still worth visiting, even if you can't read the language. I found dozens of links to Scandinavian related ice skating and outdoor sporting activities sites!
